Open Positions
Postdoctoral Position in the Unit of Microbial Pathogenesis at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Bethesda, MD.
Postdoctoral positions are available immediately in the Unit of Microbial Pathogenesis, Program in Cell Biology and Metabolism (CBMP), National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), NIH. Our laboratory studies virulence mechanisms of Legionella pneumophila, the causative agent of a life-threatening pneumonia in humans known as Legionnaires' disease. We use numerous host cell model systems and a variety of biochemical, genetic and molecular biological approaches to investigate how this intravacuolar pathogen modulates host cell signaling processes to survive and replicate inside infected cells. The successful candidate will i) characterize bacterial effector proteins that are translocated by L. pneumophila into the host cell cytosol during infection; ii) identify potential host cell targets for these effectors, and iii) evaluate the role of these host-pathogen interactions for L. pneumophila virulence.
State-of-the-art imaging techniques as well as excellent equipment for protein biochemistry, molecular and cell biology are available. The unique ‘open lab’ set-up in the Cell Biology and Metabolism Program provides a highly interactive environment with investigators that are leading experts in their field (for more details see: http://cbmp.nichd.nih.gov/index.html). NIH provides abundant training opportunities and excellent support for postdoctoral fellows. In addition, the Bethesda main campus is located in the Washington DC metropolitan area, offering a culturally rich and diverse environment.
Candidates for these positions should hold a Ph.D. or M.D. and should have less than five years of postdoctoral experience. Salary is dependent on qualification. For more information please contact machnerm@mail.nih.gov. To apply, send a CV, statement of current research, and 3 references to:
